Snow holds a unique place in our lives and our imaginations, encompassing magic, nostalgia, fear and enigma. Now it has arrived at a defining moment in the age of the Anthropocene: for much of the world there will be a before and after, the disappearance of snow.
“Will there still be a white Christmas?”, is an increasingly desperate refrain in the era of climate change. Winters are shortening and the movement of winter storm systems in the northern hemisphere is shifting, causing brutally heavy localized snowfall in some places while in others a profound “shortage”. Fauna and flora are feeling the effects: in the Alps, as the snows diminish so the ability of many animals and plants to cope with winter suffers.
TRAILER
While in the land of human society, men and women whose economic survival depends on snow are increasingly helpless. Ski resorts are forced to use artificial snow to stay open and the communities they support are feeling the financial pinch.
The fear that all this frozen beauty may disappear inspired the film: a celebration of the wonder of the snow, in all its forms.
